If you want to elevate your pickleball game, mastering the third shot drop is essential. This shot is what separates recreational players from competitive ones.
What is the Third Shot Drop?
After the serve (shot 1) and return (shot 2), the serving team hits the third shot. A "drop" is a soft shot that arcs over the net and lands in the opponent's kitchen, giving your team time to advance to the net.
Why It Matters
The receiving team starts with a positioning advantage – they're already at the kitchen line. The third shot drop neutralizes this advantage by allowing the serving team to move forward safely.
How to Practice
Start close to the kitchen and practice hitting soft shots that land in the opposing kitchen. Gradually move back toward the baseline as you improve.
Focus on:
- A relaxed grip
- An upward swing path
- Following through toward your target
